Heather Kindt: On Walter

Today we worked on a new shape. Keep in mind he will keep asking what shape is that until he gets an answer. Since he already knows circle, rectangle, square, triangle, oval, star, flower, diamond, octagon, pentagon, hexagon, and trapazoid, the 12th shape (on his toy clock) was parrallelegram. But there was tradegty when in was discovered that it could not be put in backwards as the others could. After quite a bit of crying we found something else to do.

You may know about Walt’s intense fascination with letters and numbers (Hyperlexia), so I’ll give an example from tonight of how it is manifest. We said prayers before going to bed (which he loves so much that he will dart up to his bed and climb in when I tell him it’s time for prayers). After we said amen, he said and signed E-M. This was his attempt at spelling amen.

The best discription I read about Hyperlexic children’s ability to decode language is that it powers forward like a freight train. The only thing I do is provide toys and books that compliment his interest. However I would like the train to make a stop and let his brain learn how to use the potty.
